My name is Jenessa Lemon. I am a graduate student at Utah State University pursuing a Master's Degree with Paul Wolf in the Biology Department. My research aims to answer questions about the genetic relatedness of two species of buckwheat in the San Francisco Mountains in Beaver County, Utah. One species, Eriogonum soredium, is a candidate species for protection under the ESA. This species is found growing on Ordovician limestone outcroppings, and in close proximity to limestone and copper mines in the area. However, its close relative, the widespread Eriogonum shockleyi, also grows in the area. There is some question as to whether or not E. soredium should be considered its own species, or a a variety of the E. shockleyi. We are exploring genetic data from the two species to provide information on the relatedness of the two species, to facilitate the US Fish and Wildlife Service in their decision on the listing.
